José
Gomes Temporão was born in Ocotober 20, 1951 and was nominated
as director general of the National Cancer Institute by the Minister of
Health of the Brazilian Federal Government in September 2003.
He worked as professor and researcher at the Health Planning and Administration
Department of the National School of Public Health, a branch of the
Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) since 1980, where he coordinated the
Health Innovation Project..
His first contact with the Public Health area occurred during his postgraduating
studies in Infectious and Tropical Diseases. Later, he achieved a leader
position by participating in the sanitary movement, which led to the
creation of the Public Health System (SUS).
At the National Cancer Institute Temporão was responsible for
the implantation of a participative management model and a Humanization
Project, which values health as a concept more linked to quality of
life than only to the absence of diseases. Under his administration
INCA started the search for certification by the Brazilian Accreditation
Society (CBA) – the arm in Brazil of the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations.
