Abstract
It's well known the correlation of head and neck neoplasms and tobacco, and that its functional disorders, which are similar to those of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The purpose of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of the physical therapy on such disorders, before the surgical procedure for head and neck cancers.
We have studied 46 head and neck cancer patients in evaluation for head and neck cancer, performing in the preoperatory period, the assessment of the Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP), Maximal Voluntary Ventilation (porcentage for teoric anticipated - MVV%), Karnofsky Performance Scale and muscular respiratory examination, before and after 10 sessions with the following routine: inhalation associated with Respiratory Muscle Pattern and threshold.
The statistical analysis showed that the samples for the muscular evaluation (MIP, MVV% and muscular respiratory examination) are statistically different and thus we can conclude that physical therapy is effective in the treatment of the functional disorders caused by COPD.
