Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) when compared to the histopathologic diagnosis.

The authors evaluated the cytologic diagnosis of 50 patients who were attended from December 1995 to July 1997 at Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (Departments of Cytopatholoy, Anatomic Pathology and Surgery).

In the same period there were 256 thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsies but only 50 patients underwent surgery and could have cytologic diagnosis compared with the surgical specimen histology report. The group consisted of 40 women and 10 men, with ages varying from 10 to 79 years. The greater incidence was noted in the 4th and 5th decades. Comparing cyto and histopathologic diagnosis the authors obtained the following results: sensibility 80%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value 89,5% and accuracy 92,6%.

According to these results the authors concluded that FNAB is a safe, efficient and reliable method in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.
